Why Gender Intelligence is Important

Gender intelligence is knowing how to work better with people of the opposite gender. It isn’t ignoring or merely tolerating differences—it’s celebrating them, embracing them, and understanding how to harness them to improve productivity, innovation, decision making and growth. There are many fundamental differences in which the different genders respond to a situation – be it domestic or workplace-related. Generally, this response is the resultant juxtaposition of multiple aspects of our existence including personal and impersonal factors, social, cultural, behavioral, psychological, and importantly, biological factors. Gender intelligence entails that we understand these differences and embrace them to create a better environment of cooperation and cohesion such that all the genders are able to complement each other in unprecedented ways – both at workplace and elsewhere. It is the awareness that differences in gender are first informed by nature, and then influenced by family, education, culture, and environment.

In pursuit of gender equality, organizations have realized that mere number parity cannot usher in true gender equity. Gender diversity at present is in dire need of readdressing the fact that the present-day preferred communication style is that of men, with little or no regard to the communication style of women. It is my belief that truly achieving Inclusion and Equity in Diversity will come through change in perception in all the sexes, and acceptance and inculcation of such perception into both – conscious and subconscious behavior. A better understanding of the genders and their tendencies towards thinking and acting in their own unique ways, would yield a better understanding of the opposite gender as well as open up avenues of more powerful and meaningful conversation between them – this is the desired key objective of greater harmony and cohesion between the genders, which certainly positively affects both – organizational performance as well as individual life.

Once during an interview, I was asked several generic questions while my interviewer browsed through my resume, without looking up at me even once; that was until he learnt that I was married and had a child. What he said then, still echoes in my mind; startled, he looked up at me and said, “you don’t look like a mother”!

What is a mother supposed to look like, I still wonder!

Similar isolated experiences made me think that these cracks are sadly, the part and parcel of the differences in societal perception, societal mind-shifts, conduct and general attitude and demeanour.

While, my background is strongly equipped with the gender sensitisation and communication, the paradigm of gender parity and equity was never a question of sustenance, but rather a matter of perceived credibility.

At Mars Venus coaching, I begin from a very different point of view – men and women think and act differently, and that both genders can benefit by accepting, embracing and celebrating these differences together rather than treating them objectively.
